How does Fraxel II™ Laser Treatment Work?

Fraxel II Laser Treatment produces thousands of tiny but deep columns in your skin, known as microthermal treatment zones. This procedure eliminates old epidermal pigmented cells and penetrates deep into the dermis. Just as important, though, are the areas of skin the Fraxel laser leaves untouched. For every microthermal zone the laser targets and treats intensively, it leaves the surrounding tissue unaffected and intact. This “fractional” treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area were treated at once, using the body’s natural healing process to create new, healthy tighter tissue to replace skin imperfections.

What is a Fraxel™ Treatment Like?

First the treatment area will be cleansed and then a topical anesthesia is applied. Second, after it has taken effect (typically an hour), the anesthesia is wiped off. And finally, the Fraxel II laser treatment is performed. For optimal results, most patients should receive four to five treatments.

What Happens After Treatment?

After Fraxel II treatment, you will experience a mild sunburn-like sensation and possible swelling for approximately one to two hours. Redness and swelling will vary depending on your skin type and level of treatment. Swelling will generally disappear after two to three days and then your skin may have a pinkish tone and flaking for five to seven days. After the Fraxel II procedure, always use a sunscreen such as Anthelios SX at least twice daily, to protect your skin from sun exposure during the healing phase and for several months after treatment.

You may apply Dermacia M.D. camouflage make up after treatment. Some patients are able to return to work and social obligations, on the same day of the procedure. Other people require a little more time, depending upon their skin condition and level of treatment.

How Long Does Each Treatment Take?

Each treatment takes about an hour and a half to perform.
